A Perfect Tombstone Has No Name

The promise of a name hovers above it
like the finger of a dying deity—
the unnecessary gesture of blessing

when no one is left alive.

The tombstone is thick
with shadows, thick with memories
of death when it was young.

A perfect tombstone has no past, no future.
Its present is eternal, its mossy comfort
never shaken.

It sinks into the earth
at the perfect angle of forgetting.
