Ece Gökalp

From “Bittersweet”

Issue XIII cover

‘Bittersweet’ is a series of photographs I made in Turkey during my field trips for research projects. I usually work on a specific topic, but while I’m traveling, I also can’t resist documenting some other landscapes as well. This work has a more intimate feel than my research-based projects.

The title ‘Bittersweet’ refers to my relationship to Turkey, as I resettled in Germany over 12 years ago and now I usually go there for work and family visits.

These first four images are from Cappadocia, which is as magical as the photographs show. I shot them with medium format color film. I don’t really edit my photographs that much; I like things as they are, especially when they’re shot on film.
