October Geese
On our street, an elderly couple
walks together each evening
and it is easy to see how they cling
to one another so tightly, how each
slow step brings them closer.
And the geese that fly overhead
in October, how they sing
each other home, how they stay
together in formation, their voices
echoing across the marsh.
I do not know why it is this way
and not some other way.
The couple lying quietly in their bed.
The geese passing above in darkness.
