Prayer

Nowadays my prayers are less like
the crows’ desperate orations
broadcast into the sky
for any half-awake ear that will listen,
and more like the hummingbird’s wings
above the magnolias outside my kitchen—
the softest whir, almost silence, from the window.
If you come close enough, a roar.
